Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to use the new year as a chance for a “genuine new beginning.”
In a message posted on his verified X account on Thursday, Obi urged citizens to embrace unity, truth, sacrifice, and a renewed commitment to democracy.
“May this be the year we take our democracy seriously, not just as a ritual of elections, but as a daily commitment to unity, justice, accountability, compassion, and the rule of law,” he said.
Obi described 2026 as a year for confronting national shortcomings honestly and building a broad national consensus grounded in integrity, fairness, and shared responsibility.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted the need for honesty in public office, insisting that leaders should see their positions as a call to service rather than a platform for personal gain.
“Public trust is rooted in transparency and integrity,” he added.
Obi’s message comes amid calls from various political actors and civil society groups for renewed focus on democratic values and good governance in Nigeria.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on their responsibilities as citizens and to demand accountability and ethical leadership from those in power.
