The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday presented assorted drugs and medicaments to five health facilities in Zamfara State.

The items were donated by MAP International, an international charity organization for medical support.

The benefiting health facilities are Federal Medical Centre Gusau, Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital Gusau, General Hospitals in Talata-Mafara, Gummi and Kaura Namoda.

Presenting the items, the Coordinator, Sokoto NEMA’s Operations’ Office, Alhaji Aliyu Shehu-Kafindangi, said the gesture was to complement Federal Government’s efforts in providing quality healthcare services to victims of flood, banditry, kidnapping and social vices.

Shehu-Kafindangi, represented by the Head of Planning, Research and Forcasting, NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Mr Tukur Abubakar, urged management of the hospitals to ensure judicious utilisation of the items.

Responding on behalf of the state government, the Deputy Speaker, Zamfara House of Assembly, Alhaji Musa Bawa-Musa, said the gesture was a timely and welcomed development.

Bawa-Musa said the gesture was a good support from the NEMA and Map International for boosting healthcare services and delivery.

He appealed to other stakeholders to emulate NEMA, adding that healthcare delivery required collective responsibility.

“Both the state government and the House of Assembly, we extend our appreciation to NEMA.

“We will continue to be committed towards partnership with NEMA and other development partners for the progress of the state and our people,” he said.

The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Mustafa Ahmad, commended NEMA for the gesture.

Ahmad noted that the support for health sector would help and reduce the burden of various health challenges due to financial difficulties faced by the vulnerable groups in the society.

“I once again appreciate NEMA for always considering Zamfara on emergency issues,’’ he added.

In their separate remarks, the Medical Directors, Federal Medical Centre Gusau and Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital Gusau, Dr Bello Kwatarkwashi and Dr Usman Shanawa, promised judicious use of the items by the hospitals.

Published

Fuel scarcity has hit parts of Zamfara State, with many filling stations under lock and key.

Newsmen observed that most filling stations in Gusau, Kaura Namoda, Tsafe and other places were not dispensing the commodity.

A liter of fuel is being sold at between N800 and N850.

However, efforts to speak with some Independent oil marketers proved abortive as they refused to comment on the issue.

Vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders, who spoke with DAILY POST, expressed dismay over the return of long queues at the filling stations.

“We were rejoicing that the long queues at filling stations had gone, but the problem is back,” one Abubakar Tukur said.

Yahaya Bello not subjected to media trial – EFCC

Published

on

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has dismissed claims that its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede subjected the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello to a media trial.

Olukoyede had organized a press conference where he disclosed that Bello withdrew $720,000 from a government account to pay his child’s school fees.

He also claimed that the former governor told the EFCC to come over to his village and interrogate him.

The EFCC Chairman further vowed to resign if he fails to arrest Bello and follow through the investigation.

But a former Vice President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Prof. Nwoke Chijioke, disagreed with Olukoyede.

Chijioke said the press conference was a wrong approach and an unfair trial.

Chijioke said, ‘’The EFCC chairman’s press conference of yesterday was really uncalled for. That is an unfair trial. All these challenges are because of what I would call a media trial.”

However, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said Olukoyede’s revelations did not violate any rule.

A statement by Oyewale said, “There is nothing the chairman said on Tuesday that was not already in the public domain.

“Also, we have filed our processes, and everything is before the court, so the chairman did not say anything that is not already in public domain.

“The chairman himself is a lawyer, and he knows his onions. Everything he said was within his rights as the Chief Executive Officer of the EFCC.”
