Two businessmen remanded over alleged importation of fake condoms

…As court grants N500,000 bail each, adjourns case to August 21

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of two businessmen, Mr Emeka Daniel (32) and Mr Ugochukwu Eze (35), over allegations of importing counterfeit Kiss brand condoms into Nigeria.

They were arraigned by the police on Tuesday on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and obstruction of justice. Both pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting counsel, Mrs Josephine Ikhayere, informed the court that the offences were committed on June 23 in collaboration with accomplices who are still at large. She further alleged that the defendants facilitated the escape of a co-importer and distributor of the counterfeit products, thereby obstructing the course of justice.

The charges contravene Sections 97(1), 362 and 412 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015. Section 362 carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment for forgery, while Section 97(1) provides for two years for obstruction of justice.

Presiding Magistrate Lafeef Owolabi set bail at N500,000 for each defendant, with two responsible sureties in the same sum. The matter was adjourned until 21 August 2025 for further hearing.
