The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has called on eligible residents to take advantage of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise early, rather than waiting until the final days.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Ayobami Salami, said the exercise would commence nationwide on Monday, August 18, 2025, with online pre-registration, while in-person biometric capturing would begin on August 25 at the state secretariat in Yaba and INEC offices in all 20 local government areas.
Salami explained that the CVR would run until August 30, 2026, and was designed to ensure that all eligible Nigerians are registered to vote. He urged residents to avoid the last-minute rush and stressed the importance of the process in strengthening the nation’s democracy.
The exercise is open to adult Nigerians who have never registered, those turning 18 during the registration period, voters seeking to replace lost or damaged PVCs, and those wishing to transfer their registration to another polling unit, ward, local government, or state. Updates to personal details such as name changes, address adjustments, or corrections will also be accommodated.
Salami warned against underage and multiple registrations, noting that offenders would be prosecuted. Applicants replacing lost PVCs must present a police report or court affidavit.
INEC officials said registration would run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday, with anyone already on the queue by closing time allowed to register. The commission also urged the media and other stakeholders to help drive public awareness and ensure a smooth process.
Mr. Muyiwa Yussuf, INEC’s Head of Voter Registration ICT in Lagos, added that the process had been made flexible, allowing residents to register at any designated centre, provided they have the correct details about their residence and voting location.
