A suspected homosexual man, Ola Rasheed, who was caught alongside his partner, Allen Sunday, has died after being brutally tortured by a mob in Umuahia, Abia State.

The two men were apprehended on Friday, 21 June 2025, in a hotel in Umuahia, where they were allegedly discovered engaging in homosexual activity. Outraged by the incident, members of the local community launched a violent attack on the pair, subjecting Ola Rasheed and Allen Sunday to severe beatings and torture before police arrived to intervene.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Ola Rasheed was hospitalised at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), where he fought for his life. He was pronounced dead on Monday, 23 June 2025.

Investigations revealed that Ola Rasheed had been on the run since February 2023 after he was first caught in the act with another male partner, Fadele Charles, in Akure, Ondo State.

Though the matter was reported to the police, both men evaded arrest and had remained at large. Security operatives and local authorities had been trailing them since then.

Same-sex relationships are prohibited in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which prescribes a prison sentence of 10 to 14 years for persons found guilty of homosexual or bisexual activity.

In this vein the police commissioner for Abia State CP Danladi Isa has heralded a strong warning to all same–sex perpetrators in the country to be wary of the long arm of the law which will definitely catch up on them no matter how long.

The CP affirm that the likes of Fadele Charles and others should be reminded wherever they are that their days are numbered; that no matter where they hiding in the country and how long they been hiding, the arms of the law will soon catch him and bring him to justice.
