The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in the FCT, in collaboration with two Non-Governmental Organisations, has inaugurated a barbing salon and laundry vocational centre at the Custodial Model Farm Centre in Dukpa, Abuja.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, represented by Deputy Controller Usman Yahaya, described the initiative as a major step towards strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

“We appreciate Legend Golden Care Foundation and Public Awareness on Rights and Rehabilitation of Vulnerable Persons Initiative for this contribution. These vocational skills will help inmates rebuild their lives and reduce recidivism,” Nwakuche said.

He urged inmates to take full advantage of the skills while encouraging the NGOs to replicate the effort across other custodial centres nationwide.

Speaking at the launch, Kanayo Olisa-Metuh, Executive Director of Legend Golden Care Foundation, said the initiative aims to empower inmates with practical means of livelihood upon discharge.

Representative of the House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Rep. Donatus Matthew (on behalf of Chairman Rep. Chinedu Ogah), pledged support from the 10th National Assembly, including a financial donation and commitment to expanding such programmes nationwide.

FCT Controller of Corrections, Olatubosun Ajibogun, also commended the partnership, assuring stakeholders that the donated facilities would be put to proper use.

The event attracted traditional rulers, religious leaders, and key players in the justice system, all united in advancing the cause of inmate rehabilitation and human rights.
