The Labour Party has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united despite the country’s economic and security difficulties, saying the Christmas season should inspire renewed confidence in national recovery.
In a Christmas message released on Wednesday, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, encouraged citizens to reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, stressing that the season represents more than celebration and should promote love, sacrifice and service to others.
Usman acknowledged the hardship and frustration faced by many Nigerians but cautioned against despair, describing the country as the shared home of all its citizens.
She said that although the nation is passing through a challenging period, Nigerians must not abandon hope or lose faith in the possibility of a better future.
Calling for resilience and collective resolve, the former finance minister urged citizens to continue pushing for justice, equity and accountable leadership, values she said the Labour Party has consistently championed since the 2023 general elections.
According to her, Christmas provides a moment for sober reflection, particularly at a time when poverty, insecurity and other social challenges remain widespread across the country.
She attributed many of these problems to leadership failures, adding that the season should serve as a reminder of the need for unity and compassion.
“Christmas is not just about festivity; it reminds us of love, humility, sacrifice and service to humanity,” Usman said.
“At a time when Nigerians are confronted with poverty, insecurity and other social ills, this season should bring us together in unity and shared purpose.”
She also called on Nigerians to show empathy towards one another, noting that national healing and progress can only be achieved through mutual understanding and collective effort.
Addressing political leaders and public office holders, Usman urged them to demonstrate selfless leadership and place the welfare of the people above personal interests.
She said the true meaning of Christmas should be reflected in actions and policies that prioritise the well-being of citizens and promote inclusive governance.
