Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has clarified why he inaugurated new Judges upon assumption of office in December 2024.

Speaking while receiving members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, and the Local Organising Committee for the forthcoming NBA National Executive Committee meeting, Governor Okpebholo said the previous administration’s refusal to swear in the judges was “a slap on the face of the judiciary.”

Okpebholo criticised his predecessor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for failing to inaugurate three judges who had been duly cleared by the National Judicial Council (NJC), describing the decision as a grave injustice to the state’s judiciary.

He said his government was determined to make a visible difference that would restore public confidence in the justice system and correct the errors of the past.

Okpebholo declared: “Our government will not repeat the mistake of the previous administration. The decision to deny those judges their rightful swearing-in despite NJC clearance was a disservice to justice.”

The governor recalled that he personally reviewed the matter before assuming office and found no legitimate reason for the delay or denial. He said his decision to swear in the judges barely 23 days after taking office on December 2, 2024, was an effort to correct the injustice.

“I discovered that these judges excelled in their qualifying examinations and had no blemish whatsoever. I saw no reason they should have been denied. Justice delayed is justice denied, and I could not allow such an injustice to persist,” he stated.

Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law, deepening judicial independence, and building stronger collaboration with the Bar to enhance justice delivery.

He commended the NBA for its advocacy and contribution to good governance and announced plans to provide operational vehicles for the association to support its activities across the state.

Responding, the Chairman of the NBA Benin Branch, Mr Idemudia Iredia-Osifo, applauded the governor for his decisive reforms and prompt action in swearing in the judges who had been previously sidelined.

He also praised the governor for reinstating the Customary Court of Appeal, which he said had been unjustifiably scrapped by the past administration.

He added: “Your Excellency, your courage in reversing past wrongs and your respect for the rule of law are commendable. We also acknowledge your efforts in tackling insecurity and making Edo safer for its citizens.”

The NBA chairman announced that the association would host a Land Administration Seminar on November 5 to examine the governor’s powers under the Land Use Act, assess community land practices, and make policy recommendations to the state government.

He assured the governor of the association’s continued partnership in promoting justice and fairness across the state.
