The management of Dangote Group has denied ownership of the truck involved in the fatal accident that claimed about 15 lives in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

The crash, which occurred near the university area of Akungba on Wednesday, reportedly killed a pregnant woman, a 200-level student of Adekunle Ajasin University, and her mother, among others.

In a statement signed by the management and dated 23rd October 2025, Dangote Group categorically refuted claims that the truck belonged to the company.

The statement reads partly:“The company wishes to categorically state that the truck involved in the unfortunate incident does not belong to Dangote Group or any of its subsidiaries.

“Verified vehicle registration details confirm that the truck with plate number 365XB is owned and operated by an independent logistics company with no affiliation to the Dangote Group.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the truck was not conveying any Dangote products but was transporting crushed stones in reused sacks bearing various brand names.”

The clarification followed public outcry and widespread reports alleging that the truck belonged to the conglomerate.

Residents of Akungba-Akoko have begun mourning the victims of the crash, which occurred when the trailer reportedly lost control while descending the Ikare–Akungba hill. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle rammed into several people and shops before coming to a halt, with the death toll now put at 15.

The tragedy has plunged the student community into grief, as the victims included a university student and her mother.
