The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, has called on legislators to work more closely with the executive to ensure that government policies translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

Bagudu made this appeal on Thursday during a high-level interactive session in Abuja, attended by members of the National Assembly, heads of agencies, and directors of the Ministry of Finance.

The session was themed “Strengthening Collaboration for Sustainable Financial Management and National Development.”

He stressed the importance of cohesive governance in implementing policies that drive economic progress and improve the lives of Nigerians. He highlighted the need for greater synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government to mobilise and utilise resources more effectively.

“If we are able to align legislative support with our economic strategies, the government can enhance its ability to generate and manage resources more efficiently, ultimately ensuring inclusive economic growth,” Bagudu stated.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, reiterated the government’s commitment to refining fiscal policies to promote economic stability and align them with monetary strategies.

“Our priority under the Renewed Hope administration is to maintain robust and consistent fiscal policies that complement monetary policies,” Edun stated.

He emphasised that the government was shifting its focus away from borrowing, particularly from high-cost commercial markets, towards maximising assets and encouraging investment from the private sector, both domestic and foreign.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, also highlighted the legislature’s role in supporting economic reforms. He underscored the need for collaboration among the legislative, executive, and institutional arms to ensure policies are effectively developed and implemented.

He emphasised that the legislature would support efforts to create a fairer and more sustainable tax system, which would promote national development and benefit businesses.

“It is vital that we work together across all government institutions to ensure that policy reforms are carefully structured and bring tangible improvements to our people’s lives,” Musa stated.

The session reaffirmed the necessity of a unified approach in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, with participants committing to translating policies into real benefits for the Nigerian people.
