The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has inaugurated its 2025 Annual National Food Intervention Project, worth N16 billion, to provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians. The initiative, launched on Thursday in Kano, aims to distribute one million 10kg bags of rice to underprivileged individuals across all 774 Local Government Areas in the country.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Mr Aliko Dangote, who was represented by his daughter, Marya Dangote, reaffirmed his organisation’s dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians. He stated that the initiative aligns with the core values of the Dangote Group and the Foundation.
“This initiative marks a significant step in supporting underprivileged Nigerians, especially during challenging times,” he remarked. “It demonstrates our unwavering dedication to providing essential resources to those in need and underscores our commitment to making a meaningful difference in our communities.”
The food distribution commenced in Kano State and will gradually extend to all 774 local government areas nationwide to ensure that aid reaches those most in need. Dangote, Africa’s richest man, emphasised that access to food is a fundamental human right, and it is this belief that has driven the foundation’s continued intervention in tackling hunger.
“Our mission is to improve the quality of life for Nigerians by supporting initiatives that address hunger, access to clean water, and other pressing societal challenges,” he stated.
He urged the private sector to partner with the government to alleviate the food crisis, adding, “Tackling hunger requires a collaborative approach. The government cannot do it alone; public-private partnerships are essential in overcoming this challenge.”
The launch event in Kano was officiated by Governor Abba K. Yusuf, who praised the Aliko Dangote Foundation for its humanitarian efforts. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, he announced that 120,000 bags of 10kg rice would be distributed across the 44 Local Government Areas in the state. He also emphasised the state’s commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the distribution process, with a dedicated committee overseeing the initiative.
Zouera Youssoufou, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, highlighted that the National Food Intervention Project is part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to give back to society. She reiterated Mr Dangote’s strong dedication to philanthropy, particularly in combating hunger and supporting government initiatives aimed at improving living conditions for vulnerable populations.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation has long been at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and health crises in Nigeria. Notable past contributions include the distribution of food aid, significant financial support towards alleviating hunger, and funding for healthcare interventions.
Additionally, the foundation has provided crucial assistance during health emergencies, including a donation of N66.66 million for the installation of thermal scanning systems and cameras at Nigeria’s four international airports. It also allocated N66.66 million to support the fight against diseases and previously donated N16 billion to combat food insecurity and assist vulnerable communities.
During the launch event, Ibrahim Ahmed, a beneficiary representing the vulnerable, expressed gratitude towards Mr Dangote, commending his commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Governor Yusuf, while speaking at the launch, acknowledged Mr Dangote’s unwavering support for Nigerians, recalling a similar initiative the philanthropist personally oversaw at the same location in the past. He extended his government’s gratitude and assured the public of fair distribution mechanisms to ensure aid reaches that in need.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation’s National Food Intervention Project remains a testament to the importance of private-sector involvement in addressing critical societal issues such as hunger and poverty. By partnering with the government and other stakeholders, the Foundation aims to make a meaningful impact on the lives of millions of Nigerians.
