…Marwa praises Nigeria-French collaboration, says donation will strengthen Agency’s operations
The French government has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its impressive achievements in combating illicit drugs, particularly in the areas of enforcement, prosecution, and convictions.
The commendation was delivered by the French Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Marc Fonbaustier, during the official handover of operational equipment donated by the French government to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), at the agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, 13th March 2025.
Ambassador Fonbaustier acknowledged the NDLEA’s significant strides in tackling drug-related crimes, citing the arrest of over 57,792 individuals, the seizure of 9.9 million kilograms of illicit substances, and 10,572 successful convictions within four years. He noted that Nigeria’s impressive track record in drug enforcement makes the country an invaluable partner for France in the global fight against narcotics.
“You are among the best in the world when it comes to tackling illicit drug trafficking, given your operational efficiency in arrests, seizures, and successful prosecutions. This places the NDLEA at an advantage, and there are valuable lessons we can exchange,” the French envoy remarked.
In response, Brigadier General Marwa expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as a vital contribution that would significantly improve the agency’s operational capacity. He reaffirmed the strong ties between Nigeria and France, particularly following President Bola Tinubu’s recent state visit to the European nation.
“These operational tools are crucial in enhancing our work, and we deeply appreciate this support from the French government,” Marwa stated.
He also reiterated previous requests for specialised training in investigative techniques and cyber-related financial transactions, as well as further assistance for the agency’s Alternative Development Project. This initiative aims to support farmers currently engaged in cannabis cultivation by encouraging them to switch to lawful and sustainable agricultural alternatives.
