Sanwo-Olu inaugurates fresh food hub in Agege

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the Fresh Food Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, as part of efforts by the state government to strengthen food distribution and improve access to fresh produce across Lagos.

The facility, inaugurated on Wednesday, is part of the state government’s ongoing expansion of mid-level agro-produce hubs aimed at decentralising food distribution, reducing post-harvest losses and creating more organised markets for farmers, traders and consumers.

The Agege hub is one of several facilities being developed by the state under its food systems transformation agenda, following the establishment of the Lagos Fresh Food Hub at Idi-Oro, Mushin.

The Mushin facility, which has served as a model for the initiative, recorded more than N3.8 billion in transactions as of May 2026, with over 850 vendors registered and more than 7,000 direct and indirect jobs created through trading, logistics, food handling and related activities.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms Abisola Olusanya, had earlier disclosed that the state was expanding the food hub initiative to strategic locations across Lagos to improve food aggregation, strengthen farmer-to-market linkages and enhance produce handling.

According to her, the government’s long-term objective is to establish structured food distribution infrastructure across all Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state.

The hubs are also expected to help reduce wastage of agricultural produce by providing better storage, trading and logistics facilities, while improving the efficiency of the food supply chain.

The Agege project was initially announced as part of plans to replicate the Mushin Fresh Food Hub in Agege, Ajah and Abule-Ado. The state has since expanded its plans to develop additional agro-produce hubs in locations including Opebi, Ikorodu and Bombata.

The inauguration comes as the Lagos State Government continues to position food production, processing, storage and distribution as key components of its strategy to address food security and improve the state’s food economy.

The government had also announced plans to develop a broader food logistics network linking the various mid-level hubs with the Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe.

The Agege facility is expected to provide a more structured environment for the movement of agricultural produce from farmers and aggregators to consumers, while supporting economic activities within the food and agricultural value chain.
