Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that his administration has committed over N8.4 billion in the last four years to support more than 12,000 low-income residents in developing viable small businesses across the state.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the 2025 edition of the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), held at the Blue Roof, Ikeja. The programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), aimed at reducing poverty by empowering residents with skills, tools, and startup capital.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s belief in an inclusive Lagos where ordinary citizens can build prosperous futures through enterprise.
“I see a Lagos where every woman, every young person, and every aspiring entrepreneur has access to the tools, resources, and confidence they need to transform their ideas into thriving businesses. Through MESI, we are making that vision a reality,” he said.
Over 1,700 beneficiaries, who had previously undergone vocational training at various centres in the state, received empowerment packages ranging from hairdryers, sewing machines, stoning machines, two-phase burners, smoking kilns, pepper grinders, clippers, sterilizers, POS machines, generators, cake mixers, photography gear, carpentry kits, to agricultural tools. Additionally, some participants were awarded cash grants of N100,000.
The governor explained that the initiative forms a central part of the state government’s broader mission to empower women and fight poverty by supporting micro-enterprises.
“This year, we are increasing funding, sharpening our focus on skill development, and intensifying support for women-led businesses. These efforts are grounded in WAPA’s unwavering dedication to inclusion, innovation, and practical results,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the programme goes beyond mere distribution of materials, describing it as a platform for long-term economic transformation.
“When you empower one entrepreneur, you strengthen an entire family, uplift a community, and build the future of Lagos. Over the past four years, our administration has injected over N8.4 billion into micro, small, and medium-scale businesses, demonstrating a firm commitment to an economy where opportunity is accessible to all,” he added.
He urged the beneficiaries to act responsibly with the support received:
“Use this to grow your businesses, create employment, and help others. Your progress is part of our collective journey. Let this be the beginning of something significant. As you succeed, reach back and lift someone else. Share what you learn and give back to the communities that supported you.”
In her remarks, the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Deputy Governor, praised WAPA for its consistent support to the underprivileged.
“This initiative has truly transformed lives. It is addressing the pressing economic inequalities we face in Lagos,” she said.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon Bolaji Cecilia Dada, described MESI as a crucial pillar in the state’s poverty reduction strategy.
“Since its launch, MESI has provided real, practical support to thousands of Lagosians, both young and old. Through training, equipment, and seed funding, we are translating policy into tangible outcomes. When the government pledges to leave no one behind, this is what it looks like,” Dada stated.
She urged recipients to take the opportunity seriously: “Make wise choices. Do not sell the items given to you. Honour your beginnings and let your progress inspire others. Your success will become a spark for wider impact.”
Several beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation, vowing to make productive use of the tools and capital provided, while appealing for the continuity and expansion of the scheme.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated that his administration’s long-term vision is to foster a resilient, inclusive economy where small businesses thrive and communities are empowered from the ground up.
