Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Abdul Rasheed Hadiyatullah, describing the late Islamic cleric as a symbol of compassion and integrity.

The tribute was conveyed in a statement by Buhari’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Sheikh Hadiyatullah, who passed away on Monday at the age of 81, served as President of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) and was founder of the Sheikh Ibn Baz Shariah College in Iwo, Osun State.

Reflecting on the cleric’s life, Buhari recalled a relationship marked by friendship and wise counsel during his tenure in office.

“He was a man of deep faith and humility, someone who consistently stood by the truth,” Buhari said. “His calls for peace and unity will echo for years to come. I pray Allah grants him Aljannatul Firdaus and gives strength to his family and followers.”

Sheikh Hadiyatullah was widely respected for his work promoting the implementation of Shari’ah within constitutional boundaries, and for his efforts in fostering dialogue and coexistence among Nigeria’s religious communities.
