The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, has underscored the importance of promoting a culture of inclusive and accountable governance in Nigeria.

She made the remarks in Abuja on Tuesday during the unveiling of a new book, Nigerian Leaders in the Fourth Republic and Challenges: 1999–2023.

Ahmad also called for systematic documentation of Nigeria’s political history, stressing its importance in helping both current and future generations assess national development and chart a more effective course forward.

“This kind of record serves as a springboard for deeper reflection on leadership, democracy, nation-building, and the challenges we face,” she said.

She described the publication as a valuable lens through which citizens can examine the nation’s democratic journey, noting it captures the pivotal moments, personalities, and policies that have shaped Nigeria since 1999.

“The book serves as a testament to the sacrifices and progress that have defined our democratic experience,” she said. “I encourage all of us to reflect seriously on the themes of leadership and responsibility, especially as we strive towards a more inclusive and accountable system of governance.”

The minister was represented by Khadijat Liman, Director of Education Management and Programme Coordinator for SDG 4 in the Ministry of Education.

In his remarks, the author of the book, Adams Yakubu, said his motivation was to contribute meaningfully to the body of knowledge on governance in Nigeria.

“I want to provide today’s youth with context,” he said. “This book details the policies and programmes of each administration. Without it, many wouldn’t know what really transpired during these years.”

Yakubu urged aspiring researchers and writers not to be discouraged by challenges but to remain committed to producing work that informs and enlightens.

Also speaking at the event, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Yusuf Falgore, said the book was a reminder that leadership goes beyond power, it lies in the tangible improvements it brings to people’s lives.

He urged young Nigerians to reject violence and embrace unity and peace for the country’s continued progress.
