Northern Govs condemn Niger market massacre, mourn Yobe boat disaster
…orders security manhunt for terrorists, demands rescue of abducted civilians
The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack on Kasuwan Daji Market in Niger State, describing the incident as a brutal assault on innocent civilians and a direct threat to peace, livelihoods and economic stability in the region.
Reports indicate that at least 30 traders, including women and other civilians, were killed during the attack on the market in Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area, while several others were abducted and the market razed by suspected terrorists.
In a statement signed by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General, Press Affairs, Government House, Gombe on Sunday, the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed deep shock and outrage over the incident, noting that the attack had plunged families into grief, disrupted local commerce and unsettled previously peaceful communities.
The statement reads in part: “These senseless acts of terror targeting traders and market women going about their lawful activities are morally reprehensible and strike at the very heart of communal harmony and regional economic life.”
Governor Inuwa Yahaya condemned the perpetrators in unequivocal terms and tasked security agencies to intensify efforts to track down and apprehend those responsible, stressing that the attackers must be brought to justice without delay.
He also called for the swift rescue of all abducted civilians.
According to the statement, the NSGF extended its condolences to the families of the victims as well as the Government and people of Niger State, while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for those left behind.
The Forum assured of continued collaboration with federal authorities and security agencies to strengthen the region’s security architecture and protect lives and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the Northern governors also mourned the tragic boat mishap in Yobe State, where no fewer than 25 passengers lost their lives and 14 others remain missing after a passenger boat capsized along the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area, while returning from commercial activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Forum, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need to prioritise safety in transportation, particularly river travel.
The Forum urged relevant authorities to intensify search and rescue operations, ensure that survivors receive immediate medical attention, and review and strictly enforce safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The NSGF further appealed to citizens across the North to remain calm, united and compassionate, supporting one another during the difficult period, while reaffirming its commitment to working with all relevant agencies to tackle insecurity, strengthen emergency response systems and support communities affected by tragic incidents.
