The National Police Council on Monday unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, clearing the final constitutional hurdle for his formal inauguration.
Following the Council’s endorsement at the State House, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to officially swear in the new police chief this Wednesday during the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
The high-level session, presided over by President Tinubu, drew a powerful assembly of the nation’s leadership, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, the 36 state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu.
Also in attendance were key cabinet members and security chiefs, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, all of whom gathered to deliberate on the leadership transition following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
During the deliberations, several governors and ministers offered glowing testimonials regarding Disu’s career trajectory and professional integrity.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State particularly highlighted Disu’s transformative tenure as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021, noting his excellence in modern crime control.
Similarly, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike praised Disu’s efficiency, recalling his impactful service as the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Rivers State and his more recent strategic success as the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command.
Born in Lagos on April 13, 1966, Olatunji Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent. His rise through the ranks has been defined by a commitment to academic and professional excellence, holding advanced qualifications in forensic investigation, legal psychology, and criminology.
Having previously served as the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Federal CID Annex in Lagos, Disu is widely viewed as a knowledge-driven officer capable of steering the Force toward more sophisticated, intelligence-led operations.
The seconding of the motion for his endorsement by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State underscored the broad-based support for Disu across geopolitical lines.
As he prepares to take the oath of office on Wednesday, expectations are high that his administration will prioritize institutional reforms and the deployment of forensic technologies to address Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
