Tension escalated in Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Monday, February 2, 2026, following a clash between rival youth groups, prompting prompt intervention by security forces. Residents reported hearing sporadic gunshots in the early hours of the morning after a disagreement between groups escalated. Shops temporarily closed, and commuters avoided major routes as a precaution.
Security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force and military units operating under Operation Safe Haven, were deployed to restore order. Authorities confirmed that the situation has been brought under control, and investigations are ongoing. Eyewitnesses indicated that no fatalities had been officially confirmed as of press time, though some properties were reportedly damaged during the unrest.
A spokesperson for Operation Safe Haven urged residents to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information that could escalate tensions. Community leaders are reportedly engaging youth groups to prevent further disturbances. Plateau State has experienced intermittent communal tensions in recent years, particularly in rural local government areas. Security agencies continue joint patrols and community engagement initiatives to maintain stability.
Religious and traditional leaders in the area have called for restraint and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence among the state’s diverse ethnic and religious communities. Experts note that while peace in Plateau State remains fragile, it is achievable through strengthened early-warning systems, proactive engagement by community leaders, and prioritizing dialogue over division.
