Residents of three rural communities in Borgu area of Niger State were thrown into mourning after armed gunmen launched coordinated overnight attacks, killing at least 15 villagers and injuring several others. According to villagers, the attackers stormed the communities on motorcycles, shooting indiscriminately and looting shops before fleeing into nearby forests. Security operatives have since been deployed to the affected areas as search operations continue.
Local leaders said many residents have fled their homes over fears of further attacks, while humanitarian agencies warned of worsening insecurity in North-Central Nigeria.
Bandit Attacks Continue Across Northern Nigeria
Security analysts said the Niger State attack is part of a wider pattern of escalating violence across Northern Nigeria. Last week in Zamfara State, at least 38 people were killed in another village assault by armed groups, with several residents abducted. Authorities blamed poor road access for the delayed security response. Experts warned that criminal bandit gangs and extremist groups are exploiting weak security presence in rural communities.
Conflict monitoring organizations said militant activities are increasing across border areas linking Nigeria, Niger and Benin, with attacks by extremist groups rising sharply in recent years. Security agencies urged residents in northern districts to avoid unnecessary night travel, report suspicious movements immediately, and remain alert in remote villages.
Residents from the affected communities called for more military bases in rural LGAs, faster response to distress calls, and improved intelligence gathering. Many displaced families are currently taking refuge in nearby towns.
