He said the new application for Showmax 2.0 would be available for download from Jan. 23 while the old application (Showmax 1.0) will cease to exist from Feb. 12, when the new Showmax is introduced.

He explained that Showmax had engaged in global partnerships to achieve this and to gain access to world best international content.

He noted that affordability, accessibilty were important to Showmax’s ambition with the goal to be number one streamer in Africa.

“The new Showmax will offer football lovers a stand-alone Premier League plan for mobile, with all 380 games offered live on Showmax Premier League for N2,900 at launch.

“In addition to this, there are two more Showmax plans available to customers: Showmax Entertainment on mobile for N1,200 a month, as well as the Showmax Entertainment plan priced at N2,500 per month at launch.

“Ten months after MultiChoice, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky announced a joint streaming vision for Africa, the new Showmax is here, featuring a refreshed brand and a massive content lineup.

“There are currently just over 450 million smartphones in the hands of individuals across Africa and more than 250 million avid football lovers on the continent.

“Showmax Premier League is a game-changing product that gives individuals a ticket to the football they love, wherever they are on the device they always have with them,” he said.

Filani noted that users of the previous version, Showmax 1.0, could migrate seamlessly with guidance from the streaming company.

Richard Masters, Chief Executive Officer of Premier League, who spoke virtually, said,  “Africa is incredibly important to the Premier League and our clubs; 20 per cent of Television audiences on any given matchday come from Africa.

“We are delighted with this Showmax initiative, which puts the Premier League in your pocket at a new price point so that millions more can enjoy our fantastic competition.”

Also speaking, John Ugbe, Chief Executive Officer in West Africa, Multichoice, said, “Showmax’s content offering is further boosted by its focus on the African market and strengthened by the vast creative and commercial presence already established by MultiChoice.

“Nobody understands Africa like we do. Showmax is putting the continent first with a powerful streaming service that will revolutionise streaming in Africa in 2024.

“As the first streaming service in Africa to make mobile downloads possible for offline viewing and the first to launch a mobile-only plan, Showmax has now delivered incredibly competitive new price points, with a growing network of payment options available to customers.

“This payment ecosystem is facilitated by Moment, another MultiChoice joint venture partner.

“Working with more than 200 payment partners such as banks, mobile money providers, retailers and payment schemes, Moment is building the broadest pan-African payments network.

“In addition, DStv customers will continue to have the option of adding Showmax to their DStv bill each month and benefitting from significant discounts.”

He said that Showmax would be announcing additional partnerships soon that will offer even more value to customers.

“The new Showmax app will become available in app stores from 23 January 2024 onward, as part of a staggered migration process across 44 markets.

“Existing Showmax customers will begin receiving communication with information on how to access the new app this week and by 12 February 2024 the new Showmax will be live in all markets,” he said.

Arinola Shobande, Head of Marketing, Showmax, said, “The new showmax is introducing a new era of premium entertainment, a new wave and language of entertainment built for all.

“The search engine feature on the new Showmax is well optimised and streaming for 24 hours will only attract 1 gigabit worth of data and this will be improved continually.”

Busola Tejumola, Executive Head, Content and Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, said that Showmax would release 21 originals from African countries with five originals from Nigeria.

According to her, among the five Nigerian original content are “Cheta’m; “Sadau Sisters”; a documentary series-“Freemen”; a romantic comedy-“The Counsellor”;  and a new season of the hit drama series, “Flawsome”.

“Every project speaks about excellence and I appreciate everyone who worked behind the scenes to achieve this feat.

Yemi Alade slams colleagues for downplaying Afrobeats genre

Published

Nigerian singer Yemi Alade has berated her colleagues who downplay the Afrobeats genre.

She said that while it is not wrong for artists to denounce Afrobeats especially if they feel it doesn’t define their art, it is hypocrisy for them to downplay the genre, adding that it has contributed to every Nigerian artist’s development.

On her X handle, the ‘Johnny’ crooner wrote: “I don’t see anything wrong in informing your listeners of the genre of music an artist makes especially when you feel it doesn’t define your art.

“Just Announce your Genre in peace. Downplaying the role Afrobeats has played in every artist’s development is hypocrisy.”

Alade’s social media outburst is coming against the backdrop of some Nigerian singers including Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy denouncing the Afrobeats genre.

They all claimed that they ditched the genre because all African artists boxed into Afrobeats regardless of their musical styles.

I didn’t make money from popular single Oyinmo – Young Du bombs Carter Efe

Published

on

Nigerian singer, Oluwabamishe Abioro, popularly known as Young Duu, has finally broken silence on his beef with popular skit maker, Efe Oderhohwo, aka Carter Efe.

Recall that Young Du had accused Efe of cheating him after their music collaboration that produced his popular song titled ‘Oyinmo’.

However, Efe, in an interview with Saturday Beats, insisted that he did not have any issues with the singer.

He claimed that he had reached out to the singer and that they were good.

Efe said, “Young Duu and I do not have any issues. I reached out to him and asked him why he was spoiling (tarnishing) my image, but he said he wasn’t doing so. Rather, it was all part of promoting our song, ‘Oyinmo’.

“I was paid for the show where I performed the song alone. I performed ‘Machala’, and when ‘Oyinmo’ was played, I initially did not want to perform it, but I did it as a way of promoting the song.”

But in a recent interview with HipTV, Young Duu shed more light on the matter.

According to him, he did not make a dime from the now-popular song with Carter Efe.

He said, “After dropping the song, I saw that Olamide posted about it, and I was happy. In fact, I received a lot of calls asking to be signed to their label. I felt like going with Carter Efe, and that was why when he called me for the collaboration, I responded.

“After recording and shooting the video for the song, I did not hear from him again. A few months passed before I reached out to him. He asked for my account number, claiming he would give me N500,000. To date, he has not given me the money, and he has not taken me to any show.”

He added that the reasons he raised alarm on social media were because of how Efe treated him with disdain and how the public thought he was now rich but selfish.

“The reason I raised alarm on the matter online is that everyone thinks I’m a millionaire. Whenever I reached out to Carter, how he responded was like I’m a nobody. That was why I raised the alarm online on the matter because I felt like a fool. People would not understand. They would be thinking that I’m a stingy person.

He further disclosed that contrary to popular belief, he had no bad feelings towards Carter but just needed to set the records straight, which was why he went online.

“Before I went online, I confided in a few people, and I was advised to do so. It was not about having any bad feelings towards him.”

Asked why he preferred Carter to Portable, he said, “I can only deal with Carter Efe, and not Portable because he has more connections than portable. It’s not that portable doesn’t have connections, too, but I prefer Carter.”

Speaking further, he cleared the air on the misconception making the rounds that he was signed to Portable’s record label.

He stated, “Portable did not sign me. He said he would try to help me by putting my face out there. That’s what he did for me, not that he signed me. We do not have any signed agreement.”
