…Pledges smarter traffic management future

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Tuesday unveiled its official emblem commemorating 25 years of service, reflecting the agency’s evolution and renewed commitment to efficient, technology-driven traffic control in the state.

The emblem was presented at a formal ceremony attended by government officials, stakeholders and staff. Speaking at the launch, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Olushola Giwa, described the milestone as a time for reflection, renewed dedication and forward planning.

“It is a moment for us to assess our journey so far, recognise the dedication of the men and women who have served under the LASTMA banner, and share our roadmap for a more responsive, citizen-oriented traffic management system in Lagos,” Giwa stated.

He remarked that since its establishment in the year 2000, LASTMA has transitioned from a basic traffic control body into a robust incident management agency.

“Our anniversary theme, ‘LASTMA @25: Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety in Lagos State – Road Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations’, captures our determination to improve,” he said.

Giwa outlined a series of upcoming activities to mark the anniversary, including a Lagos Traffic Summit, community outreach initiatives, staff recognition events and strategic dialogues. These, he said, will reinforce the agency’s renewed values of professionalism, integrity and excellence in public service.

Looking ahead, Giwa promised that the next 25 years would build on previous achievements while ushering in a new phase characterised by innovation, accountability and greater public confidence in traffic law enforcement.

He also acknowledged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s consistent support for reforms in the transport sector, thanking the broader Lagos State Government for fostering an environment where LASTMA can thrive.

In his remarks, LASTMA General Manager Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki said the newly revealed emblem was more than a visual symbol.

“It embodies the unyielding dedication shown by every officer who has worn the LASTMA uniform with pride,” he said. “It’s a symbol calling us to reaffirm our shared responsibility to uphold and expand the legacy we’ve built over the past 25 years.”

Bakare-Oki traced the agency’s origins to a circular issued by the Lagos State Head of Service in 2000, and explained that it has since been strengthened by key legislative frameworks such as the LASTMA Law, the Road Traffic Law and the 2018 Transport Sector Reform Law.

He credited LASTMA’s growth to steadfast dedication, resilience and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, noting that it has become a point of reference in Nigerian traffic management.

“LASTMA now stands as a beacon for promoting disciplined driving habits, innovation and exemplary service in public transportation,” he said. “Let this emblem ignite within us a renewed sense of purpose, unwavering commitment and drive to deliver outstanding service to Lagosians—ensuring safer, more orderly and increasingly efficient road use.”

The anniversary celebration is slated to take place from 15 to 17 July 2025.
