A senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances during an alleged sexual encounter with a 22-year-old 200-level female student of the institution.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba and was reported to the police by the hotel management.
The student, identified as Gloria Samuel, was taken into custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further questioning.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Ovye Aya, described the situation as unfortunate and disclosed that an autopsy has been carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the police report, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, stated that the student had rushed to the reception to raise an alarm after the lecturer collapsed in their room. The hotel immediately contacted the police, who transported the victim to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Dr. Ibikunle, who was reportedly married with children, was a lecturer in the Department of Social Studies Education. He was said to have checked into the hotel earlier that day with the student. Unconfirmed reports suggest the deceased may have consumed multiple energy drinks before the incident.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and further action will be based on the outcome of forensic findings.
