The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has applauded the official declaration of July 5 as “Ijaw Day” by the City of Houston, Texas, USA, describing it as a proud and historic moment for the Ijaw people, Bayelsa State, and Nigeria as a whole.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and made available to journalists on Thursday in Abuja.

The statement reads partly: “The recognition of July 5 as Ijaw Day in Houston, Texas, is a proud and historic milestone for the Ijaw people, Bayelsa State, and indeed Nigeria. It underscores the growing impact of Nigerian Diaspora communities and the increasing global acknowledgment of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and contributions.

“This significant milestone aligns perfectly with NiDCOM’s mission to foster stronger ties between Nigerians at home and abroad, while promoting the preservation of our cultural identity and leveraging diaspora influence for national development,” it added.

“We commend the Ijaw community and its leadership in Houston for their dedication and advocacy which led to this remarkable recognition. It is our hope that this will inspire similar initiatives to project Nigeria’s cultural diversity and unity positively on the global stage.”

Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to supporting such milestones and facilitating platforms that enhance the visibility and impact of Nigerian communities abroad.
