Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a desire to align with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for national transformation and development.

Dr Mbah announced his defection on Tuesday during a press conference in Enugu, alongside his predecessor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, members of the National and State Assemblies, local government chairmen, and top political appointees from the state.

He described the move as a collective decision of the Enugu political family to seek a new path that guarantees better representation and stronger collaboration with the Federal Government.

“Today, after a long period of reflection, we have decided to leave the PDP and join the APC. We share a vision that transformation must be disruptive,” Mbah said.

The governor praised President Tinubu as “a partner in purpose, a man with the courage to look beyond today and make the tough choices that secure lasting prosperity for tomorrow.”

He stressed that the decision was not impulsive but a well-considered step to ensure Enugu’s growth, stating, “The voice of Enugu people and indeed that of the South-East people will now be heard in Abuja.”

According to him, the defection involves over 80 percent of party executives, members of the National Assembly, State Executive Council, all council chairmen, and councilors across Enugu State.

While expressing appreciation to the PDP for supporting his political journey, Mbah lamented that the South-East zone had been largely neglected despite its longstanding loyalty to the party.

“To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude. The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory,” he said.

Governor Mbah, however, maintained optimism that his new alliance with the APC would usher in “a new era of development and progress for Enugu State and Nigeria at large.”
