Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain steadfast despite the recent wave of defections rocking the opposition party.
Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, Governor Makinde assured party members that the current challenges confronting the PDP are temporary and will ultimately make the party stronger.
He urged members not to lose faith, describing the ongoing defections as an opportunity for the party to rebuild with renewed purpose and authenticity.
“The PDP remains a truly national party,” Makinde said, noting that it has structures and members in every ward across Nigeria.
He encouraged supporters to “hold their corner” for the party and resist discouragement.
The governor expressed confidence that the forthcoming PDP National Convention would produce visionary leaders capable of restoring Nigerians’ trust in both the party and the nation’s democracy.
Reflecting on his previous role as Secretary of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee in 2021, Makinde said he accepted his new position as Chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee to demonstrate his continued commitment to the growth and unity of the PDP.
He explained that the committee’s mandate was crucial to ensuring the smooth movement of delegates and supporters from across the country to Ibadan for the convention, urging members to see their roles as acts of sacrifice toward reviving the party’s original ideals.
He further noted that this period would reveal the “genuine heroes” of the PDP and Nigeria as a whole, adding, “It’s not the time for despair or self-doubt; it’s the time to stand up and be counted.”
Makinde urged members to approach their assignments diligently, saying the success of the forthcoming convention would depend on their collective dedication and efficiency.
