The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has raised the alarm over the survival of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, after the number of doctors at the institution plummeted from 150 to just 50, leaving patients and medical students at grave risk.
Declaring a state of emergency on the facility, the Oyo State NMA chairman, Dr. Happy Adedapo, said the mass exodus of doctors was caused by years of government neglect, poor welfare, and the hospital’s exclusion from the consolidated fund making it the only teaching hospital in the country without statutory running costs.
He warned that the overstretched hospital, once a reference point in the South-West, is now on the brink of collapse, with basic operations crippled and medical students facing inadequate training.
Adedapo further lamented the absence of a governing council, which he said has crippled administrative efficiency and worsened funding gaps.
He added that more health workers are leaving due to the harsh working environment.
The NMA urged the Oyo State Government to urgently restore the hospital to the consolidated fund, constitute a governing council, and provide better welfare packages to halt further decline.
According to the association, saving LAUTECH Teaching Hospital is not just about preserving a healthcare facility, but about protecting thousands of patients who rely on it and securing the future of medical education in Oyo State.
