…Says 24-hour power supply coming by December with 60MW gas turbine
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said his administration is recording steady and tangible progress in the state’s development despite constraints in resources and structural disadvantages.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, spoke on Sunday during an inter-denominational church service held at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence and the 29th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State.
Governor Diri acknowledged that the state’s growth had been modest but assured that his administration would not relent in driving new initiatives.
He pointed to the procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine as evidence of government’s determination to provide 24-hour power supply by December.
“By December, we will be having 24 hours of power supply. That is progress because once there is light, there is hope. And we believe that with this development, more investors will come in,” he said.
The governor stressed that Bayelsa was disadvantaged in terms of revenue allocation due to its limited eight local government areas, yet his “Prosperity Government” had remained focused on boosting socio-economic activities.
He also spoke on democracy and governance, warning that Nigeria’s political system could only thrive if the rule of law and citizens’ rights were fully respected. In his sermon, “Challengers of Our Settlement,” General Stephen Odede described Bayelsa as a great state destined to triumph over its adversaries.
He stressed that while challenges exist, the state and its people would continue to progress.
Dignitaries at the event included former Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (Rtd.), lawmakers, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, service commanders, commissioners, and top government officials.
The service featured special prayers for the peace and prosperity of Bayelsa, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria at large.
