High-profile dignitaries and world leaders converged on Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday for the burial of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital.

The funeral ceremony, conducted in line with Islamic rites (Jana’iza), attracted a long list of national and international figures paying their final respects to the late statesman.

Among those in attendance was Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was accompanied by a delegation of female dignitaries including Mrs. Fatimah Abbas (wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives), Hajia Laila Barau (wife of the Deputy Senate President), Barrister Zarah Ribadu (wife of the National Security Adviser), and Mrs. Abu Ibrahim.

Governors from several states also arrived in Daura to honour the former President, including Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, who came alongside Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Niger, Ali Lamine Zeine, was officially received by Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, highlighting the regional significance of the late President’s legacy.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who served alongside Buhari throughout his two terms in office, also attended the funeral. He was joined by former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly returned from an international engagement to honour the late leader.

Security presence has been intensified across Katsina as traditional rulers, senior officials, and foreign dignitaries continue to arrive for the solemn occasion.

Buhari’s burial in his hometown marks the end of a political era, as tributes continue to pour in from within Nigeria and across Africa, recognising his influence as a soldier, statesman, and two-term President.
