Two public secondary schools in Bayelsa State Community Secondary School, Sangana and Community Secondary School, Twon-Brass have received new water facilities as part of the state’s push to improve access to safe drinking water in remote areas.
The Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF), in partnership with donor organisations, installed 9,000-litre borehole systems in both schools. These communities, located on the fringes of the Atlantic Ocean, rely heavily on saltwater surroundings and have long struggled with access to potable water.
Speaking at the project’s handover, EDTF Team Lead, Nyananyo Tubo, said the initiative is part of the state’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme and aims to improve students’ health and learning conditions.
Principals of both schools expressed gratitude, noting that the water projects will also serve nearby residents. Community leaders and partner organisations urged the schools and communities to maintain the facilities for long-term impact.
Additionally, EDTF completed the renovation of the principal’s office and staff building at Model Government Secondary School, Twon-Brass, further supporting the education infrastructure on the islands.
