Former Vice President and ex-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He described the move as a major boost to Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Obi formally announced his decision to join the ADC on Wednesday during an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State, where he called for the formation of a broad-based national coalition to address poverty, democratic decline and economic challenges confronting the country.
Reacting via a statement shared on his verified social media handle, Atiku said Obi’s entry into the ADC marked a significant milestone in efforts to build a united and credible opposition capable of offering Nigerians an alternative platform of governance.
According to Atiku, the development signals the beginning of a more coordinated political movement aimed at strengthening democratic accountability and challenging the dominance of the ruling party.
He expressed confidence that Obi’s presence would enhance collaboration among opposition leaders and energise supporters ahead of future electoral contests.
Atiku further noted that the ADC coalition initiative has the potential to attract more Nigerians who desire reforms, good governance and national stability.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had earlier accused the current political leadership of economic mismanagement, state capture and the erosion of democratic institutions, urging citizens to rally around a common platform for national renewal.
