APC slams Peter Obi over comments on Nnamdi Kanu conviction of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Obi described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and sentencing as unfortunate, suggesting that the process revealed leadership gaps and could escalate tensions rather than ease them.

His statement, titled ‘Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility’, was issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar.

Reacting on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described Obi’s comments as misguided and inappropriate.

He stressed that political actors should refrain from commenting on matters still under judicial review.

Oladejo said: “Statements like these risk undermining national security institutions and the judicial process. “They could be misinterpreted as politicising a sensitive security matter.”

He further urged public figures to maintain consistency and balance in addressing national security and public order issues, emphasising that all parties should respect judicial outcomes while allowing lawful appeals and dialogue where necessary.

Oladejo added: “National security matters must not be influenced by political considerations. Leaders should prioritise unity and stability in their public statements.

“The Federal Government remains committed to handling issues of terrorism, treason, and national stability in line with the law and the constitution.”

The APC also called on Nigerians to view Obi’s remarks within the wider context of political discourse and urged restraint, stressing the importance of responsible commentary on matters of national significance.
