With its sights set on an expansive voter population of 103 million, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has successfully completed nine out of the 14 major statutory milestones outlined in its revised timetable for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The electoral body’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made the disclosure during a high-level readiness assessment tour in Enugu State, where he met with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from the South-East zone, national commissioners, and senior administrative staff.

Prof. Amupitan noted that while the commission has maintained steady operational momentum building on lessons learned from recent off-cycle polls, the massive scale of the 2027 general elections demands rigorous planning, seamless coordination, and unflinching adherence to established protocols.

He emphasized that the commission must sustain its current pace to ensure all remaining pre-election benchmarks are met without delay.

Addressing personnel during the tour, the INEC chairman strongly charged staff to maintain absolute neutrality, professionalism, and strict compliance with the Electoral Act and the commission’s code of conduct.

He warned against yielding to political pressure, financial inducements, or intimidation, stressing that public trust remains the bedrock of a credible democratic process.

Highlighting security arrangements, Prof. Amupitan assured that the commission is actively collaborating with security agencies to safeguard election personnel, sensitive technological assets, and voting materials, ensuring that polling units remain secure and accessible across all regions despite local security hurdles.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu noted that the interactive assessment session provided a vital platform to review ground realities, bridge operational gaps, and fine-tune localized strategies ahead of the 2027 ballot.
