In a historic move for political harmony, key stakeholders, former governors, and political heavyweights across Ebonyi State have agreed to a power rotation arrangement through 2047, clearing the path for Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone to retain the governorship in 2027.

The decisive pact was sealed during a high-powered summit held on Tuesday at the Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki under the theme, “Orderly and Peaceful Political Transition in Ebonyi State: The Way Forward.”

Ebonyi political bigwigs were unanimous that Ebonyi North should retain the governorship seat to allow the incumbent, Governor Francis Nwifuru, to complete two full four-year terms till 2031. Afterwards, Ebonyi Central takes over the gubernatorial seat from 2031 – 2039, while Ebonyi South will assume power in 2039 – 2047 to complete the 24-year power rotation cycle.

Some political elites present at the summit which came from across party lines, are Senator Sam Egwu, the first Executive Governor from Ebonyi North, Chief Martin Elechi, a former governor from Ebonyi Central, Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works and former governor from Ebonyi South.

Also present was Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, the former Senate President and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, including past and present lawmakers, ministers and federal appointees.

In the official communiqué, stakeholders emphasised that equity, fairness, and mutual trust remain the pillars of Ebonyi’s peaceful coexistence. They noted that since the onset of the Fourth Republic in 1999, every senatorial zone has produced a governor who completed two consecutive four-year terms, a tradition that must not be disrupted.

Beyond political alignment, the summit lauded Governor Nwifuru’s performance under the People’s Charter of Needs, highlighting major strides in infrastructure, rural transformation, education, healthcare, human capital development, and youth empowerment.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, leaders urged political parties, aspirants, security forces, and the media to uphold law and order, strictly rejecting hate speech, political violence, and intimidation.
