A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned that any division between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi could give President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a decisive advantage in the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu recalled that Atiku and Obi finished second and third respectively in the 2023 presidential poll, stressing that a repeat of such fragmentation among opposition forces could once again reshape the electoral outcome in favour of the ruling party.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the veteran journalist and politician described Atiku as a consistent contender who has remained steadfast in his presidential ambition over the years.

According to him, history, political structure and voter enthusiasm would play critical roles in 2027, adding that unity within the opposition remains key to challenging President Tinubu.

“Buhari lost multiple times and even gave up at a point. But Atiku was always closer to the destination and has never given up. That’s admirable,” Momodu wrote.

He noted that the division of votes between Atiku and Obi in the last election significantly weakened the opposition, warning that a similar scenario would work to Tinubu’s benefit.

“He and Obi came after the other as 2nd and 3rd in 2023. Dividing them again will instantly give Tinubu an advantage,” he said.

Momodu also pointed to the growing momentum within the ADC, driven by Obi’s supporters, describing it as a major source of voter energy.

“See the energy Obi has generated from his base to ADC,” he added.

He further stated that Atiku is equally capable of re-energising his own support base, backed by what he described as formidable political structures built over several decades.

“ATIKU will re-energize his own base too and offer the formidable structures he’s been building steadily, meticulously and intentionally since about 1993, when he stepped down for Chief Moshood Abiola at the SDP presidential primary in Jos,” Momodu said.

The ADC chieftain’s comments come amid ongoing realignments and strategic calculations within Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
