The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a blistering attack on the democratic credentials of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, dismissing the opposition leaders as political opportunists who bore no scars during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule.
In a statement titled “Democracy Without Sacrifice: The Myth of Obi and Atiku,” the ruling party argued that true democratic leadership is forged in consistency and personal sacrifice qualities it claims are glaringly absent in the careers of the former presidential candidates.
The APC contended that a historical review of Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement reveals a gaping void where the names of Obi and Atiku should be.
“They made no sacrifices, bore no scars, and took no risks in defense of democracy. Yet today, they seek to claim the moral authority earned by braver patriots,” the statement read.
The party took particular aim at the political trajectories of both men, describing their careers as studies in convenience rather than conviction.
Peter Obi’s frequent movement across political platforms was cited as evidence of opportunism, with the APC arguing that his brand of politics lacks the patience and loyalty to institutions required of a true democrat.
Turning its sights on Atiku Abubakar, the APC described the former Vice President’s history of defections as a reflection of ambition without ideological consistency.
The party labeled his recent attempts to portray himself as a victim of the system as ironic, given his decades-long involvement in shaping the very political structure he now critiques.
The Lagos APC also poured cold water on the rumors of a budding coalition between the two opposition figures. It dismissed such moves as alliances built on bitterness, formed not out of shared values or policy direction, but out of frustration over electoral defeat.
“Alliances built on bitterness and desperation are not democratic alternatives. They are temporary shelters for unfulfilled ambition,” the party declared.
The statement concluded with a challenge to both leaders: present verifiable records of their contributions to the fight for Nigeria’s democracy, free from embellishment or political storytelling.
The Party urged Nigerians to look beyond rhetoric and judge leaders by their respect for the rule of law and their conduct when the ballot does not go their way.
