We will continue to champion media independence — Sanwo-Olu
Lagos Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described a free press as one of the strongest pillars of democracy, pledging that the Lagos State Government will continue to champion initiatives that safeguard media independence and strengthen democratic accountability.
The Governor’s message was conveyed in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, during an event marking the 2026 World Press Freedom Day
.This year’s global theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” served as the foundation for the state’s call to action.
According to the Governor, the annual commemoration presents a vital opportunity for stakeholders to review progress and reassess their commitment to the true ideals of press freedom.
He emphasized that the media plays a critical role in fostering peace and advancing sustainable development by giving a voice to the voiceless and acting as a vital bridge between the government and the citizenry.
In the face of a rapidly evolving information landscape, Sanwo-Olu noted that the responsibility placed on the media has never been more significant.
He remarked that current national realities, especially the various reforms being undertaken at different levels of government, make it imperative for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to remain committed to objective, balanced, and professional reporting.
He further urged journalists to critically examine government policies while ensuring accountability in a fair and unbiased manner.
The Governor also addressed the multifaceted challenges confronting the industry today, specifically highlighting the growing threats of misinformation and disinformation.
He observed that these digital risks, coupled with mounting economic pressures and safety concerns for journalists, pose significant threats to national stability.
To mitigate these risks, the Governor called for stronger collaboration among the government, media practitioners, and civil society to safeguard the integrity of the information ecosystem.
As the country approaches another electoral cycle, the Governor stressed that the role of the press in shaping public discourse becomes even more critical. He noted that it is essential for all actors to uphold the principles of ethical journalism and fairness during the electioneering process.
Concluding his message, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state’s commitment to transparency and openness.
He stressed the need for sustained investment in media literacy and the creation of an enabling environment where the press can operate freely without undue interference.
He further assured the media that Lagos State would remain a partner in protecting journalists and upholding the democratic values that underpin a well-informed society.
