The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast.

The coalition party accused the President of turning what should have been a moment of national reflection into what sounded more like a budget presentation.

ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Wednesday, said the President dwelt excessively on his government’s achievements instead of addressing Nigeria’s unity, history, and collective aspirations at 65.

“Listening to the President, you would think he was delivering a budget speech or an annual performance review, rather than speaking to the history of a nation like Nigeria at this critical time,” Abdullahi said.

He described the speechwriters as failing to grasp the symbolic importance of Independence Day, stressing that the broadcast offered little inspiration for citizens and future generations.

Abdullahi also dismissed the reforms and economic progress highlighted by Tinubu as “superficial and propaganda,” insisting that they do not reflect the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

He further criticised the President for glossing over pressing issues like insecurity, which he said continues to leave citizens in fear.

“The address made the President sound more like a partisan leader than a national figure. It failed to speak to our past and inspire our future,” Abdullahi added.
