Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities across the state, in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Announcing the decision in a statement on Wednesday, his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the gesture reflects “the spirit of compassion, justice, and renewal which Nigeria’s Independence Day represents.”

Adeleke explained that the beneficiaries, comprising men and women convicted mostly of minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy, had already served substantial portions of their sentences.

“As a government of the people, we remain committed to upholding justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens. This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for these individuals,” the governor stated.

The freed inmates include 29 persons from Ilesa Correctional Centre and seven from Ile Ife Correctional Centre.

Adeleke stressed that the amnesty is designed to enable the pardoned inmates reintegrate into society and embrace a renewed sense of purpose while contributing positively to community development.
