A heavy cloud of unrest hangs over the Udege-Mbeki community in Nasarawa Local Government Area following the grim discovery of Abdulmalik Adamu Mbeki’s remains.
The young man, who had been missing since Sunday night, was found dead at Paddock, an expansive artificial lake with a history dating back over a century to the early mining era.
The ordeal began when Abdulmalik reportedly parted ways with friends at a mining site late Sunday evening but failed to arrive at his destination.
His sudden disappearance sparked an immediate and frantic search by local residents and youth groups, who have grown increasingly wary of the security situation surrounding the region’s mining activities.
The location of the discovery, Paddock, is a historic reservoir originally excavated for the washing of columbite and tin.
While the initial assumption might have pointed toward an accidental drowning, the local community has largely rejected this narrative. Outraged youths and family members point to the physical condition of the body, asserting that it lacks the typical characteristics associated with a drowning victim.
Suspicions are further fueled by the timeline of the search efforts. Between Monday and Tuesday, experienced local divers and dedicated search teams reportedly conducted a thorough sweep of the Paddock waters without finding any trace of the missing man.
The sudden appearance of the body in an area previously cleared by divers has led many to allege that Abdulmalik may have been killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the lake under the cover of night.
In a resolute stand against a hasty burial, community leaders and residents are demanding a comprehensive autopsy.
They insist that a transparent medical examination is the only way to establish the true cause of death whether by drowning or through foul play and to prevent the situation from escalating into full-blown communal conflict.
“We cannot accept this at face value,” one community member stated. “The divers were there, the eyes of the community were there, and there was nothing. Now, suddenly, he appears. We need the truth that only a doctor can provide.”
In response to the volatile atmosphere, the Administrator of the Udege Administrative Area Council has overseen the deployment of security personnel to strategic locations.
Currently, officers are stationed at the premises of Kenyang Mining Company Ltd to safeguard infrastructure and prevent any retaliatory violence or breach of peace as the community’s anger simmers.
As of this report, the Udege-Mbeki area remains on high alert. The streets are filled with an uneasy quiet as residents await a formal response from the police and state authorities.
The demand for an impartial and thorough investigation remains the central cry of a community seeking justice for a life cut short under mysterious and troubling circumstances.
