Chaos erupted Monday morning at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters as supporters of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accused security operatives of using teargas to disperse their gathering.
The confrontation highlights a growing divide outside the commission’s premises.
Supporters alleged a double standard in crowd control, claiming that while they were forcibly pushed back at the EFCC junction, counter-protesters were permitted to assemble closer to the main facility.
“They stopped us at the junction and used teargas on our people, but others opposing him were allowed to gather near the headquarters,” claimed one supporter on the scene.
In anticipation of the former governor’s arrival, the EFCC significantly fortified its perimeter.
Armed operatives and strategic patrol vehicles created a heavy security cordon to manage the swelling crowds of both loyalists and critics.
Governor El-Rufai arrived at the facility earlier today, following his recent public confirmation that he had received an official invitation from the anti-graft agency.
Sources within the commission confirm that El-Rufai is currently inside the building undergoing questioning.
As of Monday afternoon, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding the nature of the interrogation or the allegations of teargas deployment against the protesters.
