President Bola Tinubu has issued a direct mandate for a high-level, comprehensive investigation into the systemic causes of market infernos in Kano State, following a weekend of devastation at the historic Singer Market.
The President’s order comes as a firm response to the alarming frequency of these outbreaks, which have repeatedly crippled the livelihoods of thousands of traders in the region.
The latest blaze, which ignited on Saturday evening and defied containment efforts until well into Sunday morning, ravaged the prominent food commodity hub.
President Tinubu’s directive for a probe was triggered by the disturbing pattern of these incidents; the weekend disaster occurred less than fourteen days after a similar fire decimated dozens of shops and valuable property within the same marketplace.
In a situation report obtained through direct communication with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the President characterized the recurring nature of the fires as more than just an accident, but a tragic trend that demands accountability.
The investigation is expected to go beyond immediate causes, scrutinizing the underlying factors including infrastructure gaps and safety protocols that consistently leave traders in a state of despair.
