The Nigerian Senate has firmly denied reports of a leadership clash between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, following an executive session reportedly convened to discuss the chamber’s annual recess.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, described the reports as “entirely false” and a misrepresentation of routine parliamentary proceedings.

“The reports do not contain any iota of truth,” Adaramodu said, insisting that what transpired was a standard legislative deliberation. He noted that robust debates are an essential part of parliamentary operations across the world and should not be mistaken for personal conflict or internal discord.

“These reports misconstrue time-tested practices and traditions in parliaments worldwide,” he added. “Members—regardless of party affiliations—use debates, questions, and interpellations to dissect initiatives thoroughly before any final decision is made.”

Emphasising the integrity of the Senate, Adaramodu stated that all legislative discussions, whether on the floor or in committees, are driven by national interest and conducted with transparency and accountability.

“Debates on policy issues should not be misconstrued as altercations among members, nor do they suggest any crack in the leadership’s ranks,” he said.

The clarification follows widespread speculation that heated disagreements had disrupted the Senate’s executive session, fuelling rumours of division within its top ranks.

By reaffirming internal cohesion, the Senate reiterated its commitment to serving the over 230 million Nigerians it represents, pledging to remain focused on delivering impactful, transparent, and effective legislation.
