SDP Chairmen warn impostors against twisting S’Court ruling
The Forum of State Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a strong warning to political opportunists and impostors attempting to exploit a recent Supreme Court judgment to create confusion within the party.
In a statement signed by the Nasarawa State Chairman of the SDP and Secretary of the Forum, Hon. Musa Danlami, the party made it clear that the apex court’s ruling has no bearing whatsoever on the SDP’s national leadership or authority.
Danlami stressed that the judgment arose strictly from previously concluded by-elections and merely affirmed an earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, dismissing claims that it conferred legitimacy on any leadership faction.
“The matter adjudicated by the Supreme Court was strictly an electoral issue arising from previously concluded by-elections. It merely affirmed the earlier ruling of the Court of Appeal. At no point did the Supreme Court pronounce on, validate, or entertain any question relating to SDP leadership,” the statement read in part.
The party further described attempts to interpret the ruling as an endorsement of any leadership claim as “a calculated lie and a deliberate attempt to deceive party members and the Nigerian public.”
According to the forum, legitimacy within the SDP flows solely from its constitution, not from distorted court interpretations. “Legitimacy in the SDP flows only from the party constitution. We call on all genuine party members across Nigeria to remain resolute, vigilant, and unshaken,” Danlami said.
The SDP chairmen also condemned what they described as a “forceful and laughably theatrical invasion” of the National Chairman’s office by a self-appointed group, alleging that the action was politically motivated and aided by external actors seeking to exploit security institutions.
Danlami warned party members not to be distracted by individuals attempting to hijack the party for personal gain. “Do not be distracted by impostors or those seeking to hijack what they did not build,” the statement added.
Reaffirming the party’s core values, the SDP leadership said the party remains committed to law, order, internal democracy, and institutional integrity, insisting that unity remains non-negotiable.
The party noted that while the Supreme Court ruling dealt solely with by-election disputes, certain political actors had deliberately misrepresented it as validation of claims to national leadership.
Calling for calm and vigilance, the forum urged members nationwide to remain loyal to the party’s constitution and resist any attempt to destabilise the organisation.
“The SDP remains a party of law, order, internal democracy, and institutional integrity. We will defend the unity of the Social Democratic Party against every form of sabotage,” Danlami added.
