The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has criticized the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the moves as morally wrong and disrespectful to voters who elected the politicians under their original party platforms.

Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, CUPP Secretary-General Peter Ameh said politicians abandoning their parties after elections betray the electorate’s trust.

“Those defecting to the APC don’t have shame and respect for the electorate. You contested against this party you are defecting to on the day of the election,” he stated.

Ameh argued that voters make deliberate choices based on party manifestos, not individuals, and noted that switching parties post-election undermines the democratic process.

“Except if you feel you rigged your election, because the electorate went to the polls, saw APC, PDP, and Labour Party on the ballot and decided to ignore the APC and voted for you,” he added.

The CUPP official also emphasised the need for Nigerians to take stronger ownership of their democratic future, stressing that citizens have the power to demand accountability.

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, he said while the people sought change, insufficient institutional structures limited the protection of their votes, urging the electorate to remain vigilant in future elections.
