Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for ensuring a smooth conduct of Saturday’s Local Government elections, describing grassroots leadership as the backbone of democracy.
Sanwo-Olu, who cast his vote at Ward E3, Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, said the peaceful atmosphere at polling centres reflected the growing maturity of Lagos voters and the effectiveness of election planning.
“Voting is going on well. The officers are on ground, and I’ve conducted my civic responsibility without issues. It’s peaceful, and all party agents are present,” the governor said after voting.
While monitoring early reports of logistics hiccups in some areas, Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that election materials had been adequately deployed and urged residents to turn out en masse.
“I want to commend LASIEC for their effort so far and encourage Lagosians to use the opportunity to exercise their civic rights,” he stated.
The governor stressed the critical role of local governments in Nigeria’s democracy, noting that council chairmen and councillors remain vital players in delivering essential services at the grassroots level.
Sanwo-Olu also hailed the resilience of Lagos traffic management agency, LASTMA, as it marked 25 years of existence, describing it as a model for other states.
He urged residents to respect traffic laws and continue to work with government agencies to maintain order across the state.
