The Akobo community in Ibadan was plunged into chaos on the night of February 14, 2022, following a violent assault by a group identified as Oro.

Eyewitnesses reported a scene of intense pandemonium characterized by chanting and frequent gunshots, which forced many families to abandon their homes in a desperate search for safety.

Residents described the experience as a nightmare, recounting the terror of grabbing children and fleeing into the night as the violence escalated.

This latest incident is part of a broader pattern of insecurity, as the Oro group has reportedly engaged in a sustained campaign of harassment and intimidation against the community.

Prior to this attack, the group had been linked to a series of armed robberies, kidnappings, and sexual assaults against local women. Despite repeated interventions by community leadership and the police, efforts to curb these assaults have so far yielded minimal results, leaving the area vulnerable to recurring tragedies.

The escalation of violence has prompted urgent demands for government intervention and a permanent security presence in Akobo.

Local leaders have condemned the attacks as unacceptable, stressing that residents deserve protection and the right to feel secure within their own homes.

As the community attempts to recover from the trauma, advocates continue to call for decisive action to restore peace and prevent further displacement in the region.
