Police declare man wanted over alleged homosexual offence in Lagos

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has declared Egere Samuel Etuwevwiriayin, 53, wanted following allegations of engaging in a homosexual act, an offence criminalised under Nigeria’s anti-LGBT law enacted in 2014.

The offence, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years, was reportedly committed on 20th May 2025 at a club in Apapa, Lagos State, according to a police statement. The police spokesman explained that Egere was allegedly involved with a male partner identified only as Victor, who is still at large.

It was gathered that a mob reportedly confronted the duo at the club, resulting in Egere sustaining injuries to his leg before he was taken into police custody. Sources said he later escaped from police custody while receiving medical attention.

A magistrate court in Apapa has since issued a warrant for his arrest, and the police are appealing to the public for assistance in locating him. Authorities stressed that preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged act took place, and efforts to apprehend and prosecute him have so far been unsuccessful.

The police provided the following details to aid identification: Name: Egere Samuel Etuwevwiriayin; Age: 53; Address: 8 Tolu Road, Olodi Apapa, Lagos; Occupation: Clearing Agent; State of Origin: Delta; Local Government: Ajeromi Ifelodun; Tribe: Urhobo; Religion: Christian; Complexion: Fair; Language: English.

The NPF urged anyone with information on Egere’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station to facilitate his arrest and prosecution under Nigerian law.
