The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected claims that it has asked members to pay N10,000 each to fund party activities, describing such reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said a recent headline by a newspaper, not Nigerian NewsDirect misrepresented the party’s position.
“While the interview was accurately quoted in the body of the report, the headline amounted to clickbait and gave a wrong impression,” Ememobong explained.
The PDP clarified that comments about funding were made in response to questions on how the party intends to sustain activities following defections by some governors.
“The strategy is simple: go back to the people. When people support you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, Nigerians made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice. We are returning to that voluntary model,” the statement read.
The party stressed that any reference to N10,000 was purely illustrative, not compulsory.
“There is no fixed amount, no obligation, and no levy imposed on any member,” Ememobong said, urging the public and party members to disregard misleading headlines.
The PDP reaffirmed its commitment to voluntary, grassroots-based funding and encouraged members to support the party in ways they consider appropriate
