The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has directed the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) to investigate rising concerns regarding the alleged marginalization of indigenous barge operators within the nation’s port system.

The Minister issued the directive during the 2026 First Quarter Citizens and Stakeholders’ Engagement, Sectoral Performance Review, and Ministerial Management Retreat held in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola expressed concern over reports of deliberate efforts to sideline local operators, despite their vital role in easing port congestion and facilitating cargo evacuation.

Oyetola emphasized that the federal government remains committed to promoting indigenous participation and ensuring equity across the maritime value chain.

As the port’s economic regulator, the NSC has been tasked with conducting a transparent investigation to identify anti-competitive practices and recommend corrective measures.

Industry stakeholders have long maintained that local barge operators are essential for improving port efficiency and reducing pressure on road infrastructure.

However, systemic bottlenecks and preferential treatment continue to limit their growth. Oyetola reaffirmed that his Blue Economy agenda prioritizes inclusivity and warned that any practices found to undermine local operators will be addressed decisively.
